Sora Marine Services Ltd successfully won the bid of the management of the Multi Purpose Research Vessel (MPRV) 'Janan'. Under the contract Sora Marine provides the full management of the vessel including all maintenance, upkeep and operations. Sora marine quality management system and standard will be applied to this state of the art vessel to ensure it is maintained and operated at the standard that meets or exceeds the statutory requirements. The safety of the vessel, its crew, researchers and the vessel upkeep will be at the forefront of Sora Marine's management philosophy.
The Multi Purpose Research Vessel 'Janan' is a generous donation presented to Qatar University by the then, H.H. the Heir Apparent and Chairperson of Qatar University Board of Regents, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani.
For Qatari environment researchers in general and marine studies in particular, Janan is a dream that has come into reality. The vessel is equipped with stunning, cutting-edge technologies in the field of oceanic sciences, and is expected to advance marine environmental studies and research in Qatar and the Gulf region as well.
Janan launches a new era of research that is expected to attract new Qatari scholars who will conduct further studies on Qatar's waters and its natural resources. Students and faculty will also benefit from the vessel's modern technologies and laboratories. Qatar and its people are proud about the future and potential of 'Janan'.
The Janan has an overall length of 42.8m, breadth of 10m, gross registered tonnage of more than 1000 tonnes, maximum draught of 3.7m (which will allow it to reach the shallow areas of the Arabian gulf), normal cruising speed of 12.5 knots, and maximum speed of 14 knots. The vessel can sail for 21 days and accommodate a total of 30 technical and scientific staff.
The Janan is second-to-none in the Gulf Region, and can sail in the waters of the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Oman, the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. It can sail on a non-stop journey of approximately 4500 kms. It is equipped with two main engines, allowing it to work near oil and gas platforms, has the ability to function on generators without relying on the major engines and contains an advanced system to stabilize the vessel using satellites. It has 5 sophisticated research laboratories, and electrical generators. Facilities also include a sewage treatment unit, water desalination plant, an Emergency Room for medical emergencies, and a diving room.
Equipment on board includes:
Specialist ROV, acoustic Doppler current profiler, side scanners, sound speed sensors and other science and marine life study equipment which will be analysed by the various laboratories. On board there is a main lab for acoustics, a wet lab for seal life and water studies, a chemical lab, a biological lab and equipment rooms for ROV and diving operations and a decompression chamber.
The vessel can hold up to 30 POB in comfort.
